Evaluating STEM Education Programs with Kathy Haynie
- On September 8, 2020
This month, we talk with Kathy Haynie, Director of Haynie Research and Evaluation, about evaluating STEM education programs. Kathy has worked in the STEM evaluation field for almost 20 years and was gracious enough to let us pick her brain on her background and approach to evaluation, as well as what she (and the field at large) have learned over the years about the types of program features that encourage engagement in STEM, particularly among underrepresented groups. Her work has recently focused on computer science education, so we also chatted specifically about gender, the reasons why there might be persistent gender differences in computer science outcomes, and what some programs are doing to close the gender gap.
Kathy has worked on a ton of projects, which you can learn more about here. She also shared that much of her evaluation approach is rooted in empowerment evaluation, and asked David Fetterman to share some resources with us. Folks, he did not disappoint. We link to three resources immediately below, but in case listeners are interested, we also provide some extra resources at the bottom of this page.

Forever, people! Stamps featuring your historical heroes. Stamps with cartoon characters from your youth. Stamps featuring artists you never heard of, but boy do they make your envelopes look great! Please visit your local post office today and let them know how much you appreciate them by purchasing a sheet of stamps. Better yet, make it a book, because, like our love of the post office, these stamps last forever!
